Phytochemicals

What are Phytochemicals?

Phytochemicals are naturally occurring compounds found in plants that are known to have health-promoting properties. Also known as phytonutrients, these compounds are not considered essential nutrients, but research has shown that they may have beneficial effects on human health.

Phytochemicals can have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and other health-enhancing properties. They are found in a wide variety of plant-based foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and herbs. Examples of phytochemicals include carotenoids, flavonoids, resveratrol, glucosinolates, and phytoestrogens. Consuming a diverse and colorful array of plant-based foods can provide a rich source of phytochemicals, which can contribute to a healthy diet and support overall well-being.
