Allergies

What are Allergies?

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to a substance that is usually harmless, such as pollen, dust, or certain foods. Common symptoms include sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, skin rashes, and swelling. In severe cases, allergies can cause anaphylaxis, which is a life-threatening reaction that can affect breathing and blood pressure.

The best way to manage allergies is to avoid the triggers. Over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays can also help alleviate symptoms. In some cases, allergy shots or immunotherapy may be recommended.

When is it necessary to see a doctor?

If your allergy symptoms are interfering with your daily life or if you experience difficulty breathing or swelling, it's time to see an allergist. An allergist can perform allergy tests to identify the specific allergens causing your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan that may include medications, immunotherapy, or lifestyle changes.
